In most classrooms, children share one old text book
between 3 pupils. Homework is impossible. Teaching
in Kenya is very much needed.

Highs and lows.
The lack of teaching aids is often
frustrating. Its just you, your voice, chalk and a blackboard.
The children in Kenya love school and
have a big desire to learn. Watching them progress can give an
incredible sense of satisfaction. A volunteer placement doing teaching can
have an enormous impact on many little lives.
Taking a laptop can be wonderful for
the children who, many of which would have never seen a computer. Be
sure to have lots of pictures and educational software to show.
In some schools physical punishment
still goes on. Volunteers must be prepared to see this.

Primary education is mainly free
in Kenya. A few years ago the government realized the importance of
having a free education system and allocated as much money as possible
to the thousands of primary schools across Kenya.
Despite better funding the schools lack
almost everything we take for granted. The pupils still share
textbooks on a 1 to 3 ratio and many pupils sit on the floor due to a
shortage of benches. Many share pens and pencils and even shoes! The
teachers also are under pressure as the number of classes and pupils
exceeds the amount of trained teachers available. So every day across
Kenya classes full of children are sitting without a teacher thus not
getting an education.
Volunteering is a great way to
help some of these schools give these kids a much wanted basic
education. You don't have to be trained to go and teach either. The
primary school level that our schools operate at is pupils from
nursery to 14years old. The ages do vary in each class as many pupils
who have long term sickness have to repeat whole years. (This is very
common.) Anyone who has good communication skills, speaks clear
English, is
enthusiastic and good at interacting with children can be an asset to
a Kenyan school. The rewards are enormous. From teaching basic words
and numbers
to sitting under the sun watching them play a ball game you may have
taught. Teaching placements are simply incredible. Choose from one of
the placements below and go and change some lives!

Despite free primary
education, secondary education is still private. So if the child does
well in exams he or she most probably will not be able to afford high
school.
