Turtle
populations have been declining since the urbanisation of the beach resorts,
global warming and of course the tsunami in 2004. This is because the turtles for
thousands of years have come on these beaches to lay their eggs. With the
human / animal conflict this balance has drastically reduced the number of
hatchlings as turtles have been unable to come and breed in peace. The Kosgoda
turtle project is working towards restoring the balance back to the area.
Based in 2
locations volunteers, work at the turtle hatchery itself where turtles are
bred and re-introduced to the sea at the right time. The other location on
the beach is a natural breeding centre where staff monitor the turtles
coming ashore at night, then mark the area where they have laid eggs. The
staff monitor the beaches to ensure the turtles can continue without any
human disturbance. Volunteers can work doing night shifts on the beach on
turtle watch with the staff and also work in the hatchery itself helping
maintain the breeding tanks, feeding, releasing and also advising the
visiting tourists of what the operation is all about. Full training and
information is given on induction but it its advisable to research turtles
before you travel to give you an advantage. |

This
project would suit anyone wishing to contribute some work to an under funded
organisation (it survives on donations alone) helping to protect and
preserve these wonderful animals. Volunteers get direct hands on
interaction with the turtles and should be keen, outgoing and flexible
with work load. Night watch not essential for volunteers. |

|
Volunteers will be hosted in Kosgoda beach area in either a rented house
with cook provided or a host family. All meals and each day and
transport is also provided to the project and back. The houses are located
within walking distance of stunning beaches and very close to the busy town
of Ambalangoda where you will find banks, shops, markets and cafes.
Volunteers coming in groups can also be catered for at a high quality beach
residence. Inspire also reasonably priced hotel accommodation at the
beach resort close to the projects so volunteers can take a meaningful
holiday by volunteering at our placements in the morning and enjoying free
time in the afternoons to relax or visit local attractions. |

A great and worthwhile
project with hours to suit volunteers. Whether its working purely on the
beach on turtle watch (that involves hours of waiting around of course but
great for beach lovers!) or hands on taking the new born turtles shortly
after they hatch, and releasing them into the sea. Rewarding and fun work.
Again, we can combine this with other local projects as well with hours to
suit. |

Kosgoda is
a beach resort located 2 hours from the airport and 1 hour further down the
coast from the Dutch fort of Galle. Kosgoda has miles of spectacular beaches
and tropical lagoons with many hotels where volunteers can visit for a drink
or for a small fee be able to use the pool and other facilities. Kosgoda
also boasts stunning wildlife from Turtles to eagles, lizards, monkeys and
other interesting habitats can be viewed at the local lagoons via boat.
Across Sri Lanka our staff can arrange a huge variety of personal trips for
volunteers to ancient cities, elephant orphanages and vast Buddhist temples.
Other attractions include the spice gardens, tea plantations and Adams peak
in lush jungle complete with waterfalls. We can also arrange language and
cultural inductions so people can fully embrace the society of Asia on a
personal level, a privilege not normally available to tourists.
