Located just 10 minutes inland from the coastal beach resort of Kosgoda the orphanage is home to 35 girls ranging from 5 to 18 years old. All girls have either been orphaned from the 2004 Tsunami, abandoned at a young age or lost parents due to poverty.

Work starts at the home as the girls walk home from school at 2pm for lunch. The orphaned girls then engage in several routines all of which volunteers can participate in. The girls have to wash, clean and do daily tasks as well as do some study. Volunteers can interact with them and the staff to help support them in an environment short on family love so familiar to everyone else including the tourists holed up in their big hotels just a couple of miles away! The girls do have spare time to play in the garden, pray, sing and use the computers that were donated some time ago although they lack software and anyone with knowledge of how to use them! The home also has sewing machines and some musical instruments so volunteers with skills can spend time teaching either in groups or on a one to one basis. The girls are terrifically friendly and will welcome interaction from volunteers to help make up for their parentless existence. This project is set in large tropical grounds with many rooms both upstairs and down giving plenty of space for the girls. Volunteers can also combine this placement with the day nursery just a few miles away where we would have a volunteer transferred from after lunch if required.

People from all walks of life wishing to work alongside children less fortunate, from married couples, students, retired people, social workers, and many more, we seek flexible, adaptable and kind volunteers to help improve the daily routine for these young women. The project is also a great opportunity to teach skills to the girls so could be treated as a childcare / teaching development placement where volunteers are encouraged to be inventive with any activities you wish to undertake. From playing ball games on the front lawn with the girls to helping them make their beds and prepare food this project is rewarding on many levels.

Volunteers will be hosted in Kosgoda beach area in either a rented house with cook provided or a host family. All  meals and each day and transport is also provided to the project and back. The houses are located within walking distance of stunning beaches and very close to the busy town of Ambalangoda where you will find banks, shops, markets and cafes. Volunteers coming in groups can also be catered for at a high quality beach residence. Inspire also reasonably priced  hotel accommodation at the beach resort close to the projects so volunteers can take a meaningful holiday by volunteering at our placements in the morning and enjoying free time in the afternoons to relax or visit local attractions.

A lovely peaceful location, close to Kosgoda and in an area simply bursting with interesting culture. Despite the backgrounds of these girls they are all very polite and grateful, and will make a volunteer feel very special. English is better in some more than others and the staff speak very little, but with some guidance from our staff, volunteers could have a wake up call from working with such genuinely lovely people providing an unforgettable time.

Kosgoda is a beach resort located 2 hours from the airport and 1 hour further down the coast from the Dutch fort of Galle. Kosgoda has miles of spectacular beaches and tropical lagoons with many hotels where volunteers can visit for a drink or for a small fee be able to use the pool and other facilities. Kosgoda also boasts stunning wildlife from Turtles to eagles, lizards, monkeys and other interesting habitats can be viewed at the local lagoons via boat. Across Sri Lanka our staff can arrange a huge variety of personal trips for volunteers to ancient cities, elephant orphanages and vast Buddhist temples. Other attractions include the spice gardens, tea plantations and Adams peak in lush jungle complete with waterfalls. We can also arrange language and cultural inductions so people can fully embrace the society of Asia on a personal level, a privilege not normally available to tourist
