The
hospital has 30 beds, a maternity unit and separate male and female wards as
well as a small unit treating small emergency treatments. Like most areas
outside of the cities the small hospitals run on very few staff. This one
has just one resident Doctor and the other staff are either being trained on
site or work on a voluntary basis. Most medics once qualified stay close to
the cities where earning potential is higher thus putting more strain on the
rural hospitals. More serious cases get transferred to a bigger hospital
about 20 miles away or to one of the 4 teaching hospitals in the capital of
Colombo. |

Medics
of all types and levels who can help out in a facility low on staff and
resources. Most of the care is basic nursing and assisting the Doctor with
his daily duties. The atmosphere is relaxed yet busy. English spoken by some
staff is only very basic and volunteers will be given a full induction and
time to settle a program
on arrival with the guidance of our local staff who are well connected with
the hospital.
Nurses,
Doctors or any type of medic who wants to experience daily hands on in a
rural Asian hospital will find this a truly rewarding experience. The
hospital desperately needs volunteers every day who would make an enormous
difference for the time they stay. Volunteers can also choose the hours of
work to suit as all our programs are custom made. That also means our
programs can be combined with a beach holiday or alternative projects giving
you maximum flexibility. So if you are a medic seeking a busman's holiday and
don't want to spend all day on the beach we can help you out! |
 |
|
Volunteers will be hosted in Kosgoda beach area in either a rented house
with cook provided or a host family. All meals and each day and
transport is also provided to the project and back. The houses are located
within walking distance of stunning beaches and very close to the busy town of Ambalangoda where
you will find banks, shops, markets and cafes. Volunteers coming in groups
can also be catered for at a high quality beach residence. Inspire also
reasonably priced hotel accommodation at the beach resort close to the projects so
volunteers can take a meaningful holiday by volunteering at our placements
in the morning and enjoying free time in the afternoons to relax or visit
local attractions. |

Despite having just 30 beds
the lack of trained staff in this hospital make it a great experience for a
medic seeking to be able to impact on a local community from the outset. The
hospitals hygiene standards are very poor and volunteers can engage in
re-education programs with existing staff if they wish as we encourage
volunteers to be resourceful, flexible and inventive. Sri
Lankan people are truly hospitable and will provide volunteers with an
unforgettable time and the opportunity for the personal experience they
desire. Our projects are the real deal. Provision of working places not
filtered or set up for volunteers truly separates us from the rest. |

Kosgoda is
a beach resort located 2 hours from the airport and 1 hour further down the
coast from the Dutch fort of Galle. Kosgoda has miles of spectacular beaches
and tropical lagoons with many hotels where volunteers can visit for a drink
or for a small fee be able to use the pool and other facilities. Kosgoda
also boasts stunning wildlife from Turtles to eagles, lizards, monkeys and
other interesting habitats can be viewed at the local lagoons via boat.
Across Sri Lanka our staff can arrange a huge variety of personal trips for
volunteers to ancient cities, elephant orphanages and vast Buddhist temples.
Other attractions include the spice gardens, tea plantations and Adams peak
in lush jungle complete with waterfalls. We can also arrange language and
cultural inductions so people can fully embrace the society of Asia on a
personal level, a privilege not normally available to tourists. |
