CHILDREN'S
Home
and informal school .
Nairobi. Teach small groups of older orphans.
The centre is located in Nairobi West estate; it was started in 2001 to
cater for the orphaned and vulnerable children from the nearby Mitumba and
Kibera slums.
The centre today caters for up to 80 children between the ages of five and 19.
Forty five of the children have attained secondary education from the centre
whereas scores of them are to do the same next year. There are also those in
primary and pre-primary stages of education. The centre
has more older children who require one-to-one time.
It lacks an established source of income hence it is totally dependant on
donors and well wishers like you. Uplifting and changing the lifestyles of these children would mean a better
future for Kenya and Africa as a whole. This would inspire hope and give Nairobi a face worth its radiance and
beauty. Nairobi has risen in a single century from a brackish uninhabited
swampland to a thriving modern capital faced with a number of globalization
discontents. Despite these, Nairobi stands tall and proud as Africa’s
Safaris capital – the only city in the world where one can see wild animals
living naturally in the wild
and side by side to man.The city never seems to sleep. The entire town has boundless energy,
thriving human life and great contrasts where race, tribe and origin all
become facets of a unique Nairobi character.
Together with Mombasa the two cities paint a vivid portrait of Kenya. They
create a diverse melting pot of races and traditional and modern cultures,
with a history as rich as the natural wealth, hospitality and topographical
beauty that is truly African and could probably be found only in Kenya. |

A volunteer could help
cooking, laundry and teaching the children as the centre has classrooms
within the compound.
The home has a myriad problems one of the most pressing being rent arrears
that has accrued to Ksh 357,000,($2800) over the years due to financial constrains.
Today, the centre risks eviction, a situation that would deprive them their
only known source of hope, knowledge and solace.
The home has almost no furniture, cooking apparatus and proper learning
facilities. Groups of vvolunteers could therefore
if they wished, buy timber and hire a local
carpenter with whom they he or she can furnish the centre paint it and make
it a better place to live in.
One could also initiate economic activities that could earn the home money.
With a more than 40 of its children having attained secondary level of
education, volunteer(s) could work hand in hand with them to attain multiple
and long lasting achievements. Volunteers can also visit
the families and younger children in local slums to this placement to
assist, teach and support. Would suit mature, flexible volunteers prepared
do do a number of hands on tasks. |

This program would best suit
any one with a humane heart. Someone willing to reach out and inspire hope
where there might be none, someone with a niche to leave the world a better
place that he/she found it.
This program would also suit groups of two to twenty with a common goal like
fund raising to buy such home kitchen equipments or buy them enough food to
take them through a month, six months or a year.
Such groups could initiate projects like painting the home, buying more
beddings, toys, books, medicine, expand the home building wise to
accommodate more children comfortably. This is because Kenya produces an
orphan every five minutes as results of deaths from HIV/AIDS and other
ailments.
The program would also best for those who wish to teach and work in a
children’s home simultaneously. Teaching is paramount
here as the children struggle to get an education with such little
resources. Any volunteer with particular skills to offer is also welcome to
enhance the lives of the teens and equip them for the working world.
Counselling is also welcome as each child is old enough to understand the
neglect and tragic story of why they live in this world. Like most volunteer
projects the volunteers are expected to be flexible and accommodating with
tasks and work often under own supervision. |

Food and accommodation will be provided for by a
carefully selected host family in Nairobi. |
 |
This placement is suitable
for people from all walks and strips of life – with an interest in fellow
human beings’ plights and sufferings.
A month or two here could change lives. Including perhaps even your own! The
children here are slightly older and would benefit from people able to teach
various subjects including computer skills that are much needed. |

Many who have visited East African cities, have
an impression that, “Nairobi is East Africa’s hub of fun". The city is awash with standard fun bobbling joints for the young and the
old alike.
Nairobi is the only city in the world where one can go for a game drive in
the wild, thus, weekends out to the Nairobi National Park could be in order.
There is also the Nairobi Safari Walk, Animal orphanage, a giraffe and an
elephant sanctuary, where one could get to kiss a giraffe lip to lip.
For a cultural night out a visit to the Bomas of Kenya, will leave you
thrilled and educated about various Kenyan traditional cultures, music and
history. One could also climb Mount Longonot, two hours drive from the city, for
skilled climbers, Inspire Kenya will be more than glad to organise her
volunteers a climb up Africa’s second highest point – Mount Kenya. The
mountain’s icy peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5,189m) are accessible
only to experienced mountaineers,
Kenyans are uniquely hospitable people, intelligent and out going. A chat
with them over a drink after a hard day’s work could be equally a fun.
We can also organise safaris and other trips for you at weekends or before
or after your placement. Inspire staff will visit you on placement and can
arrange and travel you may wish to do, or simply suggest places you can eat
and drink. |
