Volunteer Teaching
the deaf at a special school in Central Kenya
The school is located at Mukurue-ini division in Kenya’s Central Province.
Mukuru-ini is rich in indigenous tall green trees with rivers and a climate
that switches between warm sunny and chilly misty patterns.
The school is as special as the community surrounding it. Started in 1988
with only ten hearing impaired boys, This was the first school of its
kind, today, there are two others bringing the total number to
just three in the whole country!
The school was later on integrated to accommodate girls and boys with
hearing ability. It is today a geyser of knowledge to more than 200
students.
Though the school has achieved a lot through corporate sponsorships, a lot
still stands to done to bring it any where near acceptable standards.

Once placed, a volunteer could take on a number
of activities the prime of the all being teaching. As for the medical or
counseling experts, a schedule that would ensure time for consultation with
students for either medication or inspirational discussion and advice could
be arranged.
The school has enough room for games. Sports’ funs could therefore join the
students on the field for a game of football, volleyball, netball or
athletics. Those with skills in various games could take this opportunity to
introduce and coach games of their interest.
Volunteers are welcome to get innovative and initiate useful programs
(educational or economic) during their stay. At the start
you will discuss with the organises a program of activities to suit the
school using your skills to the best advantage. |
 |
|
The program would best suit any one who cares about any
kind of deformity. If you can teach sign or already have in some way that
would be an advantage. Many of the pupils are fully able. Those willing to volunteer in school should harbour an
optimistic attitude that would leave the students and the entire Kenyan
population with a positive mentality, one that will prove that disability is
not inability.
The program would also suit groups of between two and six people who would
like to fund raise and take on a project like painting, furnishing the
classes using self made furniture, construction or purchase of special
equipments for the deaf students.
Medical and any one working with deaf people or a deaf person who would like
to teach can also take on this project.
Those who know sign language can use their skills to educate the children on
issues like HIV/AIDS and pump self-esteem in them to enable to take on the
future confidently.
Community workers looking for new challenges will find the school
interesting.
The school’s location is rural hence those taking on the project must be
prepared to live away from civilization. There is also a room full of
donated computers with very little or old software, volunteers who are savvy
with pcs could take the children for lessons and arrange a special schedule
with the school. |
 |
|
The school has special rooms for volunteers.
Inspire will provide enough foodstuff, bottled water and cooking gas to last
through the placement duration. We also can arrange
accommodation at a local host family where the volunteer can walk or get a
bus into the school. Meals, drinks and private room would all be provided
here.
Volunteers with laptops could carry them as teaching aides and
entertainment. Electric power is available. |
 |
|
This placement would be perfect for anyone
wishing to live and work in a set up with a mixture of able and disabled
children, mostly to work with hearing impaired children.
It would also be perfect for groups of people who would life to initiate
projects that would touch lives positively as they watch. Such groups could
paint the school, repair broken furniture, re-do a leaking roof, or fix up
the kitchen using better locally available materials.
Medical and education experts with experience with the deaf will also be of
great help to the school. Its location is in a beautiful
location surrounded by valleys of tea and coffee plantations, rivers and
lush green bush. This school really does need volunteers with skills as it
often gets forgotten by the outside world. |
 |
|
The school is situated 45 minutes away from
Nyeri town, where it is possible to find all things modern – from Internet
to pubs and five star safari clubs. Nairobi is a 3 hour
drive on good roads away.
This part of the country has a beautiful topography that is well covered by
tall and green trees that gives a perfect setting for bird watching, or
evening walks.
For the adventurous, Mt Kenya is only an hour away, thus an attempt to climb
to any of its three peaks would be a fulfilling move.
One could also visit the Aberdares National Park – home to some of the
biggest rhinos in the world. The park is also rich in bird life and those
wishing to have a glimpse of some of Africa’s cats are likely to have their
wishes fulfilled. Aberdare's is less visited by tourists
so you can often enjoy seeing wildlife alone. Lastly you could take a couple
of days out to visit Nakuru national park. A bird lovers paradise. Here you
can see the world famous flamingos, over one million of them! A world class
spectacle.
