The island has a population of about 37,000 but is spread over its large 15km long by 6km wide area (Approx) The Lake provides most of the islands income via fishing. Its truly isolated and has a community where everyone knows everyone. As part of the Suba district is also carries one of the highest HIV percentages in Kenya. Some regions running to 40%.
Teaching or assisting teachers in remote school nestled on hill with panoramic views of Lake Victoria. They welcome any help they can with the pupils aged 4 to 15.

Teaching or assisting teachers in remote school nestled on hill with panoramic views of Lake Victoria. They welcome any help they can with the pupils aged 4 to 15. Good English already spoken by most teachers and older pupils. Volunteers can take their own lessons or help out in existing ones in this laid back but very friendly school. If you have something to teach, then this is a great platform to do it. The school needs people who can teach computers, any physical games and volunteers are free to create their own programs. Be ready for a warm welcome!

Traditional African home. All basic local food provided. Fish, rice, beans, egg. Located very near school. Small shops around selling basic needs. The nearest supermarket is a 2 hour taxi boat ride away. Despite being basic your host family will accommodate you as best they can. We provide you with bottled water.

Swimming in the Lake. Ruma National Park. Fishing. Access to you own white sand private beach. Mainland 2 hours away by boat. Closest town with ATM, email etc is Homa Bay 3 hours away. 2 night Safari trips to Masia Mara available. Because of the islands isolation trips take much longer.
our view   If your looking to live and work as they do in Kenya this is ideal. The island  is however stunning. It has almost no electric, no running water, no flushing toilets, no tarmac roads and no entertainment. This would only suit someone looking to reach rural Kenya and live as most people do in the world. You would be treated like royalty and would be amazed at the warmness and generosity of the locals. A truly unforgettable experience for those who really do want to escape it all.
