Volunteer Nursing at Small Rural based clinic. Central Kenya

medical volunteering in kenyaThe dispensary is located in Central Province’s Mahiga division.
Having served the community for over 80 years, the dispensary is a vital health care facet for the community's. The dispensary served the country well during the fight for independence from the British colonial rule. It has closed down twice due financial constrains, always re-opening because of its importance to the community that is as beautiful as its landscape of tropical green hills and valleys. Its in a beautiful location only 3 hours drive from Nairobi. Lush topical valleys, teas and coffee plantations, waterfalls and rivers make this an idyllic ( and always overlooked) location to volunteer.

location

A volunteer would be given responsibilities depending on his/her medical qualifications.
Qualified doctors and nurses will be allowed to carry full day to day treatment of various diseases whereas medical students will work under the supervision of a qualified medical personnel. One could also initiate his/her own programs that are aimed at giving the health facility a face-lift. For that matter, a volunteer can attend to patients by morning, and paint a section of the clinic in the afternoon as a suggestion. The clinic runs and eye surgery once a week and would welcome almost any level of medic to assist and help in the daily running of this dispensary. Recently the clinic opened a much needed maternity unit serving a very wide community. Basic and in need of much support it has been welcomed from miles around. The staff and community is small and close knit and would welcome any medical volunteer with open arms.

would suit

This program would suit those who like to work in a less busy medical institution to help them balance up their time between philanthropic work and their profession. Medical experts or students wishing to volunteer in an isolated area of the country can take upon the program. Groups of people wishing to donate to hospitals or start up medical projects that can help people instantly will find this dispensary ideal. Mature and serious medical contributors would we most welcome.

acommodation   We can arrange superior accommodation in a luxury house for up to 4 volunteers at a time. You will have en-suite rooms, quality food, private cook and private transport each day to the medical clinic. See pictures below right. The compound has its own gardeners and 24hour security. Volunteers can relax by a lit fire at night before dinner or sit on the patio looking over miles of stunning valleys. Private transport is provided each day for the volunteers.
our view

Not for those seeking an active social life of pups and clubs! ( although the town has decent restaurants and small bars) This is a real rural clinic where you would soon mix in and become one of the community. A very friendly and unique placement for those wanting to reach that bit further out. Your sure to make many, many friends here. You could also combine this with the children's home in the same location. One month in each! This is a special and beautiful location overlooked by many as Mombasa is always the temptation. The whole set up here could provide an amazing experience for any medic looking to reach out to a rural Kenyan community without living like a gap year student!

local things to do

The home is situated 30 minutes away from Nyeri town, where it is possible to find all things modern – from Internet to pubs and five star safari clubs.
This part of the country has a beautiful topography that is well covered by tall and green trees that gives a perfect setting for bird watching, or evening walks.
For the adventurous, Mt Kenya is only an hour away, thus an attempt to climb to any of its three peaks would be a fulfilling move. One could also visit the Aberdare National Park – home to some of the biggest rhinos in the world. The park is also rich in bird life and those wishing to have a glimpse of some of Africa’s cats are likely to have their wishes fulfilled.
