name

CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE / School South coast of  Mombasa. Duel volunteering project, teaching and orphan care.

The Orphanage is located about 500 meters away from Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa. The orphanage is home to 50 children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The home is also linked with a small primary school. Making this a joint teaching and orphanage placement. Many of the orphans attend the adjoined school.
Though the city of Mombasa is hailed as the cradle of East Africa’s civilization and the gateway to some of Kenya’s oldest and magnificent tourism sites and sounds, this Children’s home portrays a different picture.  A picture of a city caught between the magnificent beauty of white  sandy beaches with natural decorations of palm trees and mangrove forests, thriving marine life, rich culture and a number of economic, social and environmental challenges that may destroy the city’s future faster than it took to build.
Mombasa is a city endowed with scenes that never leaves the minds of those who have visited it, whether for work or pleasure. The city never sleeps and neither does it stop to throb with beauty, pleasure and sadness – the perfect ingredients of a life either well lived or intended to be lived well.

place

The home’s needs are as huge as the Indian Ocean that roars about a kilometer away from its back yard. Once placed at the home, a volunteer could choose to help with any of the day to day chores that include cleaning, cooking, laundry amongst many other things.
If interested a volunteer could also teach the children as most of he attend a single primary school. Therefore one can combine the social work with teaching; this would be a suitable program for those who would wish to go the extra mile of increasing the children’s knowledge in addition providing a shoulder to lean on. During the day you can attend the primary school to help with teaching in class or helping out on the compound in general. Volunteers are expected to take part in all duties to help staff in this location. Tasks included washing by hand, sweeping and helping cooking and other jobs that form an essential part of the running of these placements. Potential volunteers must understand this prior to booking. As the children school during the day volunteers can split their time between the 2 locations and must be inventive and resourceful in approach to ensure success for this project.

would suit

This project would best suit an individual or a group of 1,2 to 18 people wishing to work hard towards up lifting an underprivileged person’s life in a place surrounded with both natural and modern beauty. The place would also suit those who wish to experience white sandy beaches under a perfectly hot weather. That taking the project need not to be experienced travellers as the city of Mombasa has excellent social amenities. If you have skills to teach within the primary school or are looking to carry out projects while on the ground this is an excellent location. The school has had 2 laptops donated (by Inspire Volunteers) but is yet to have electric connected and requires IT teachers or people to take previous volunteer donations to the next level. Other tasks could include repairs, painting, sport, art, music or any skills that you have to pass on.

acommodation

The home has a large roof terrace with panoramic views of Mombasa and the Indian ocean. A white sand beach is only a walk away. Local shops sell basic items but a taxi or bus into Mombasa only takes 30 mins where you will find supermarkets, cafes and other shops.
Only five minutes walk away is the accommodation apartments, fully furnished with swimming pool. We will provide a stock of basic food stuffs although this will be self catering based. Pictures below. This would be based only on 2 people sharing for 1 month. Lone volunteers can be hosted in Mombasa town at another location. ( Price varies depending on accommodation selected)

our view   This placement would best suit a person looking to set out on a philanthropic mission laced with a bit of fun and adventure. Working here would be sure to give you a really genuine feeling of contributing to a developing country. A great hot, tropical location close to the sea and city. If you have raised funds and want to see children benefit straight away there is much to do here. Teachers of any level or childcare professionals are welcome to this placement. The school seeks people who can teach at any level including sports and the home requires people with practical skills to enable them to expand their livestock section that provides the children with milk and eggs, Former Inspire volunteers have donated chickens and two cows and would like new volunteers to continue the program.
local activities   It is usually said of Kenya that, “A visit to Kenya without a stop at Mombasa is no visit to Kenya” The city is a wash with activities ranging from a swimming to basking on the White sandy beaches. For a memorable swim, a trip to Kisite Marine Park would make Kenya a person’s favorite get away destination. Imagine taking a swim on a perfectly white sandy island at the middle of nowhere. Mombasa is surrounded with a number animal parks including Tsavo National park that is three hours away. Shimba hills game reserve where some of the biggest elephants in the world are found is also a couple of kilometers away from the city. For nature lovers, there are loads of aquatic flora and fauna, and topography to marvel at. The southern coast of Mombasa is full of lagoons to snorkel in as well as a visit to the Mangrove swamps where you can canoe and spot the crocodiles! In Mombasa the party never stops for the out going people.
( We can add on a Safari when you are in Kenya. You don't have to book in advance if you have not made your mind up.)
