KENYA SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION AND CARE OF
ANIMALS. Volunteer assistance required.
Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) is located 15
minutes away from the Nairobi National Park which is 20 minutes away from
the capital’s central business district. With a smaller branch in Mombasa, KSPCA has over the years been hailed as the
“The voice for animals in Kenya”. The society has over the years rescued and
re-housed dogs of all breeds, cats of different strain, donkeys, goats,
rabbits, horses and pigs. Animals at KSCPA have different stories and backgrounds, ranging from
national heroes (dogs that have won international accolades for mystifying
rescues) to those that were taken away from abusive owners. The list is also
inclusive of animals that were rescued from the streets and those that could
be under pain due festering infections or ailments in a community where no
one cares. Because Kenyans are people struggling with day to day basics like food and
shelter, the majority is not able to afford a better life for their pets as
a result the animals are never in their list of priorities. This creates
room for stray cats and rabid dogs that could in the long run turn harmful
and not man’s best friend. Dogs for example could turn fierce and pass on rabies upon biting a person,
which is possible because the dogs are up and about living their life and
protecting themselves the best way they know how. A volunteer’s efforts could help abolish such dangers and give Nairobi the
glory it deserves.
Nairobi has risen in a single century from a brackish uninhabited swampland
to a thriving modern capital faced with a number of globalization
discontents. Despite these, Nairobi stands tall and proud as Africa’s
Safaris capital – the only city in the world where one can see wild animals
living naturally in wild. The city never seems to sleep. The entire town has boundless energy,
thriving human life and great contrasts where race, tribe and origin all
become facets of a unique Nairobi character. Together with Mombasa the two cities paint a vivid portrait of Kenya. They
create a diverse melting pot of races and traditional and modern cultures,
with a history as rich as the natural wealth, hospitality and topographical
beauty that is truly African and could probably be found only in Kenya. |

At KSPCA there is a million and one things to do
for the animal lovers – rescue a suffering animal, clean its cage, groom it
and feed it as if you were the mother or father – of which you will become
without a doubt. One can also help the veterinary doctors attend to the sick and help them
recover.
From time to time, a volunteer could help take education to the wider Kenyan
society on how to treat the animals, make them understand that they too
breath the same air, they too have same blood colour and feel the same pain
and torment whenever mistreated or physically abused.
KSPCA has a department that makes cheap and practical
animal handling tools where a volunteer with artistic mind could spend time
helping out.
One could also come up with innovative ideas that could improve the animals’
dwellings at the home. |

Many who have visited East
African cities, have an impression that, “Nairobi is East Africa’s hub of
fun". The city is awash with standard fun bobbling joints for the young and the
old alike. Nairobi is the only city in the world where one can go for a game drive in
the wild, thus, weekends out to the Nairobi National Park could be in order.
There is also the Nairobi Safari Walk, Animal orphanage, a giraffe and an
elephant sanctuary, where one could get to kiss a giraffe lip to lip.
For a cultural night out a visit to the Bomas of Kenya, will leave you
thrilled and educated about various Kenyan traditional cultures, music and
history.
One could also climb Mount Longonot, two hours drive from the city, for
skilled climbers, Inspire Kenya will be more than glad to organise her
volunteers a climb up Africa’s second highest point – Mount Kenya. The
mountain’s icy peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5,189m) are accessible
only to experienced mountaineers, Kenyans are uniquely hospitable people, intelligent and out going. A chat
with them over a drink after a hard day’s work could be equally a fun. |
