Mpunguti is located in Kwale District, Coast Province. The park is 6
kilometers off the Kenyan Coast (at Shimoni) and 8 kilometers north of the
Tanzanian boundary.The 39 kilometers
sq park is about 5 meters above the sea level and one and a
half hours drive from Kenya’s oldest and second biggest city of Mombasa.
Kisite has been under protection for decades, as a result, it has evolved
into one of the most beautiful places in the world with more than
250-recorded aquatic animal species. This is one is one of the few places in the world where huge schools of
fish, sea turtles, whales, corals, thick sea grass and a swim with countless
dolphins can be experienced. In addition to the natural beauty, Kisite’s
natural shifts that are dictated by ocean tides leaves all in deep amazement
by awesome sight s and sounds that any living person
interested in marine life should experience. |

Work at Kisite revolves round preserving a
legacy of beauty created by nature. A volunteer could therefore join the Kenya Wildlife Service patrol group to
ensure that the park’s waters are not fished and ocean floor is not damaged.
By helping manage the park, a volunteer would be helping protect the scenic
islands, special habitat of a wide range of endemic marine animals, breeding
migratory birds and the huge coral gardens (the rain forest of the sea).
While on patrol a volunteer gets the perfect chance to go snorkeling, to
inspect the turtle territories, spot dolphins and whales, realms of sea birds
amongst other species. When not in the field, a volunteer could help with data entries at the park’s offices. For this placement a volunteer should carry footwear (webbed shoes) T-shirt, snorkel, mask, fins, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellant, plenty of drinking water and a camera that can take photos beneath the water. The Kenya Wildlife Service’s senior warden will also give out a number of assignments from time to time. |

This placement would suit any one who likes a
mixture of work and fun. The person could be of any age as long as he or she
is fit and has no phobia for huge water bodies. The bigger the group, the more the fun, people could therefore come in groups of between two and six people. Kisite Mpunguti is a must for every ecology, geography, marine science or general science professionals or students or any one inclined towards either of the above disciplines. If you are fit and have an interest in coastal conservation and like lots of varied work under the sun then this is for you. |

Kisite is a must visit for all alive. White sand beaches within easy access. For those who like humid and hot weather, water based adventures, this is home, sweet home. |

One other popular place to visit is the Mangrove swaps near the Funzi river mouth in south Mombasa. This is protected area not frequented by many tourists so is a pleasure to go at anytime. Once there you can use a canoe with a guide to travel the mangroves and spot an enormous range of bird and insect life. The area is also host to very large crocodiles and you will likely spot Baboons as well. Like much of the coast line from this placement there are many Lagoons where you can spent your free time snorkelling or just relaxing under the sun.
