The vast majority of our
placement accommodation is based on host family occupancy. This is
beneficial in a number of ways over a hotel stay.
Firstly,
it is much cheaper than a hotel and the fee charged goes directly to
the family instead of a potentially large company. It also reduces the
overall cost of a placement that's as long as a month or two.
The fee we pay the family covers
everything a volunteer needs and still leaves plenty for the family to
consider it viable. Families in Kenya can then use the funds to pay
their rent or pay for their children's secondary education fees. This
in turn means that the money is always put to good use and stays
within Kenya helping people as intended.
We select local families who are
better off than most in order to house our volunteers in a safe and
secure area. Often in security guarded compounds.
They will provide a you with you
own bedroom, wardrobe basic facilities. You will have bathroom access
and free run of the house.
They
may ask about dietary requirements but generally its limited to what's
available locally. Curries, sausages, fried chicken, rice and beef are
fairly staple foods in Kenya towns. Cereals with fresh milk, tea,
coffee and toast for breakfast. We also supply you with unlimited
bottled water on request.
Kenyans are very friendly and
warm and will afford you the level of privacy and service you require.
Often the homes will have children who may occasional ask you help
them with their homework or watch them play. The parents will treat
you as family and be able to offer you lots of advice and local
information along with our support staff during your first few days.
Many have gardens where you can relax and read under the hot Kenyan
sun.
Accommodation
is basic, but comfortable and safe. Many placements we now offer
superior accommodation at an extra cost. This includes complexes with
swimming pools and very modern facilities. Information on request.
