APRIL 2008. - Helping the Agape Nursery Feeding center. Nairobi- Kenya.

Friends of Africa group, Bill, Sharon, and Jennifer went to the Agape Feeding center in Nairobi for 1 month. Agape is a place totally unsupported by foreign sponsors and very much a place of need. Still only supported by the help of Inspire, the Friends of Africa group and fund raising by former volunteer teacher from London, Jamela Khan. In their time at the center the group achieved wonderful results. Here is what they had to say.

"We bought and put up two tent awnings and some chairs to provide outdoor classrooms. Uniforms were on our list, but after much consideration we decided to purchase 4 Singer sewing machines (peddle, no electricity) so that the lady’s group who supports the center could save money by making the uniforms with the fabric we purchased. A table to cut fabric on was being made when we left. On an ongoing basis they can continue to sew items that can be sold and provide revenue to the center.
After that we concentrated on the kitchen where they had been cooking over a campfire. We ordered some locally crafted stainless steel stoves that are insulated, holding two very large stainless steel pots that sit above ground and are charcoal or wood burning. Now the cook does not have to get up at 5:00 am to begin the daily rice and beans – the beans should cook in an hour! With a few posts and tin we were able to expand the kitchen area to accommodate the new stoves. At a future date we hope to add an oven component so they can make cakes and sell them to raise funds. Baking is not common in Nairobi!
More water capacity was needed so we purchased a 600 gallon water tank to connect into the current tank so they would have a larger source of water between fillings. We paid a local person (husband of the cook) to lay a concrete base to sit the tank on.
On leaving we left monies for Olivia who manages the center to be able to provide electricity to the classrooms and also to provide music for their dance club. Kenya Inspire was able to get a good bid for this job.
We would like to add that this center is run capably and with a lot of love by Olivier Ch. Chiraba and Maragaret C. Kimalyu. Their love is evident when you see the kids at the center who are very happy and loving. We visited another state run orphanage that by no means had the same charisma!
You all made this possible and we are very proud of your commitment. Thank you so much for supporting these projects! We think we spent your money wisely."
Sincerely,

Bill and Sharon Johnson

With the recent increase in the cost of rice, places such as Agape have suffered very hard financially. Jamela Khan has sent Inspire funds raised from the local Rotary club and her own private fund raising to help Agape with this ongoing problem. The people of Dundalk, Ireland also contributed to the bulk purchase of some Mattresses for the children to sleep on after feeding. Before they slept at the desks or just on the hard, dusty floor.

Mattresses and rice donated by Jamela Khan, people of Dundalk and the Langley Rotary club, UK.

Despite massive improvements, Agape needs ongoing support to pay for its staff and the rising cost of rice- the biggest problem facing Africa now.

They changed lives...

....can you?

Donated to Inspire Projects is very easy as we are a small organisation in constant and direct contact with our friends overseas. Donations are sent, then our staff will take pictures of what the money was used for. Money is not swallowed up in Company or charity admin!!

MAY 2008. Brenda and Andrea make big changes to Nairobi Children's home in just 2 Weeks!

The girls donated very generously to this state run children's home that is very under funded. Within the 2 week stay they did the following with Inspires ground staff assistance.

  • Donated DVDs to keep the children active and entertained.

  • Presented a huge quantity of games, stationary and educational tools

  • Equipped the home with kitchen items, detergents and a unit for the children to wash hands and learn about hygiene.

  • Installed a 100 litre water erne so the children for the first time could get water to drink between meals.

  • Donated bags of food

  • Bought much needed new mattresses for the children's beds and cots.
