name   volunteer in africaVolunteer Teaching at Coastal Mombasa primary school. Kenya.

Volunteer overseas in kenya, volunteer sri lanka, teaching and nursing abroad.volunteering in africa or asia for gap year or mature volunteer breaks, teach in kenyaThe school serves children from various backgrounds with most of them coming from underprivileged families. Most of these families can only afford a single meal a day. The school therefore suffers irregular class attendance because the children are then forced to engage in child labour with hopes of proving the next meal for them and their families.
The school has tried to curb the problem by introducing a feeding program. The program worked out well but was soon iced up to a halt owing to insufficient funds.
Most of the 240 children currently relying on the school to give them a chance in today’s knowledge controlled world walk long distances to school. Like most of the children in the city that is considered Africa’s heart of tourism, they walk past luring opulence everyday, ranging from 800 dollars a night hotel to 30,000 dollar cars everyday. In their ragged school bags, the children would have no pens and pencils, enough exercise books and nearly no text books.
At the school, school, learning basics are scarce with learning aides like computers only read about and seen in books.

placement

Like all the schools under Inspire Kenya’s programs, one needs not to be a teacher to get something that would have an immediate and lasting positive impact on the children and the community at large going. Other than teaching, volunteers are welcome to get innovative and initiate or revive programs like that of feeding. One can also volunteer to give the school a face lift by painting it, buying nails and a bit timber to repair broken furniture with the help of a local carpenter who are unbelievably cheap to hire. The school welcomes anyone with something to teach or offer. The school has a computer room but no computers. Text books are in short supply.

would suit

This program would best suit teachers and students from all walks and levels of the profession. Non teachers or people with specific knowledge may also join this program. It would also suit groups of either students or professionals who would like to help out while on holiday as Inspire Kenya can make special arrangements for one to help out in the morning and take on excursions or have fun at the perfectly white sand  beaches of the city in the afternoon. As for those would not like to loose their comfort while helping out at the school, Inspire  can book them on at a partner hotel a stones throw away from the school.

accommodation

Volunteers stay on a private secure estate in superior host house complete with security and house staff. This large house has private room and tropical gardens for you to relax. The host provides private transfers to and from the school. The location is close to the north coast white sand beaches where you can relax and find bars, cafes, banks and places to visit. The family are very friendly, speak perfect English and are used to handling international visitors.

our own view   This is a perfect placement for those wishing to see Kenya as it is seen through the eyes of its natives – a mixture of extreme hardship and exclusive fun and beauty that is probably beyond imagination. A great all round teaching placement in a good location for facilities. This is a busy central Mombasa school that needs support as the teachers a few and resources low. The headmaster works out a program for volunteers own teaching levels and skills. Since Inspire has been sending volunteers the profile and standards in this school have clearly risen. Details can be made on request to find the benefits of volunteering in this way.
things to do

It is usually said of Kenya that, “A visit to Kenya without a stop at Mombasa is no visit to Kenya” The city is a wash with activities ranging from a swimming to basking on the White sandy beaches. For a memorable swim, a trip to Kisite Marine Park would make Kenya a person’s favorite get away destination. Imagine taking a swim by a perfectly white sandy island at the middle of nowhere. Mombasa is surrounded with a number animal parks including Tsavo National park that is three hours away. Shimba hills game reserve where some of the biggest elephants in the world are found is also a couple of kilometers away from the city. For nature lovers, there are loads of aquatic flora and fauna, and topography to marvel at. The southern coast of Mombasa is full of lagoons to snorkel in as well as a visit to the Mangrove swamps where you can canoe and spot the crocodiles! In Mombasa the party never stops for the out going people. The city has shops, bars and restaurants that are all inexpensive. Mombasa has a good, safe taxi service and is very quick to move around. The town center has large hotels where international guests can go an meet and drink in a quality but traditional atmosphere.
( We can add on a Safari when you are in Kenya. You don't have to book in advance if you have not made your mind up.)
