Many children became orphans as a result of their parents having died from AIDS. Some children were taken care of initially by their grandparents, who died later or had second thoughts about looking after them. Some of them became street children and others destitute. A few children have mothers who are earning a living on the streets as prostitutes, but they are not capable of looking after them. Others became street children because of difficult circumstances at home. They have been through a lot and some children have even been abused by parents/step-parents. A number of children have just been abandoned by their parents and we do not know where the parents are now. This has caused physical as well as mental damage.
Activities
at the centre Like all the Inspire Kenya’s programs, one needs not to be a qualified teacher or social worker to go and have an immediate and lasting positive impact on the children and the community. Other than being involved with the regular activities, volunteers are welcome to be innovative and initiate or create programs with the centres owners. One can also volunteer to give the project a face lift by painting it, buying nails and a bit timber to repair broken furniture with the help of a local carpenter who are unbelievably cheap to hire. As with all our programs if you have skills you think will be of use we would like to hear about them. |

The centre will benefit
from having a nurse/doctor, community worker/ social worker, sports teacher
or anyone with experience in handling children. Most of all volunteers must
be expected to cover a range of activities in order to help the project get
by. Other tasks can be helping in the kitchen, shopping or basic cleaning.

Host families on the island of Mombasa is where volunteers will be based. It’s easy for the volunteers to live on the island and use matatus (local buses) to and from the project. The families are located in secure areas and will provide breakfast and evening meals included. |

This is a perfect placement for those wishing to see Kenya as it is seen through the eyes of its natives – a mixture of extreme hardship and exclusive fun and beauty that is probably beyond imagination. A great all round Childcare placement in a good location for facilities. | |||

It is
usually said of Kenya that, “A visit to Kenya without a stop at Mombasa is
no visit to Kenya” The city is a wash with activities ranging from a
swimming to basking
on the White
sandy
beaches. For a memorable swim, a trip to Kisite
Marine Park would make Kenyan person’s favorite get away destination.
Imagine taking a swim by a perfectly white sandy
island at the middle of nowhere. Mombasa
is surrounded with a number animal parks including Tsavo
National park that is three hours away. Shimba hills game reserve where some
of the biggest elephants in the world are found is also a couple of
kilometers away from the city. For nature lovers, there are loads of aquatic
flora and fauna, and topography to marvel at.
The southern coast of Mombasa is full of lagoons to snorkel in as well as a
visit to the Mangrove swamps where you can canoe and spot the crocodiles!
In Mombasa the party never stops for the out going people.
The city has shops, bars and restaurants that are all inexpensive. Cyber
cafes, hotels and ATMs are all in easy reach. |
